About The music of Donald Yu

Welcome to my site! It has the recordings of most of my original compositions ranging from my most earliest works to the recent works. My earlier works are generally featured by tonal languages, expressive melodies, neo-classicism, as well as both functional and non-functional diatonic harmonies. As I grow older, my personal style gradually emerges which is characterized by the intermingling of the lyrical language of atonality, stylistic diatonic materials as well as some Chinese color.

About this user

Dr. Man-Ching Donald Yu is a Hong Kong born Chinese prolific composer, pianist, music theory and composition teacher as well as a conductor. His works are characterized by the intermingling of the lyrical language of atonality, diatonic materials as well as Chinese color. He has composed over hundreds works in many genres ranging from vocal and chamber instrumental to opera, symphonic and choral works. Most of the pieces have been frequently and actively performed around the world.

Since early age Yu started learning piano, theory, composition, as well as conducting and made his debut twice as a piano soloist with Pan Asia Symphony Orchestra at the age of 16. He has earned a Licentiate of the Royal Schools of Music (L.R.S.M.) in piano performance and a Bachelor of Music degree in piano performance from Baylor University in U.S.A., studying piano with Prof. Krassimira Jordan who is esteemed as a Mozart interpreter while he also learned composition and conducting at the same time. Upon graduation he then continued to pursue his composition study under a scholarship at the International Summer Academy Mozarteum in Austria where he earned a diploma as well as also joined the Darmstadt International Summer Courses for New Music in Germany. Later he completed a Doctor of Philosophy degree in composition and music theory with the music theory thesis "The Pitch-class Formation of Joseph Schwantner's Distant Runes and Incantations" under a full scholarship at Hong Kong Baptist University studying composition with Christopher Keyes and the main analytical methodology of his thesis is set-theory.

His music has been premiered throughout the United States including Texas, New York, Massachusetts, Pennsylvania, Mississippi, Iowa, Maryland, and Georgia as well as Mexico, England, Italy, Ukraine, Austria, Australia, Indonesia, and Hong Kong. Among various events where his music and theory paper have been selected for performance and presentation include the 17th International Festival of Modern Art:Two Days and Two Nights of New Music (the Ukrainian section of the International Society of Contemporary Music), the 6th Yogyakarta Contemporary Music Festival, the 2007 Internationale Sommerakademie Mozarteum, the 17th Australasian Computer Music Conference, the 3rd Cortona Contemporary Music festival, the 9th International Music Theory Conference in Belgrade, and many others. Among other major venues where his works have been premiered include the world-renowned Universität Mozarteum Salzburg, Odessa Philharmonic Theater, Lugansk Philharmonic Hall, Chernivsti Philharmonic Hall , Lviv Conservatory, Harvard University and many others. Yu has received awards, commissions or/and performances from the Lugansk Academic Philharmonic, Chernivtsi Philharmonic Symphony Orchestra, Onondaga Civic Symphony Orchestra, Opera Hong Kong Chorus, the Choral Fellows of the Harvard University Choir, Hong Kong Youth Choir, Hong Kong Chamber Orchestra, JSU Chamber Orchestra, Equinox Trio, Duo 46,HKBU Girls Choir, Resonance Chanters, Ithaca College, ASCAP, Sir Edward Youde Memorial Fund Council, and many others. From 2012 Yu is also the composer-in-residence of the Tuen Mun Children Choir. Among various publishing companies which publish Yu's music include Edizioni Sconfinarte in Italy, Wehr's Music House in Florida, Zimbel Press in U.S. Massachusetts, the Hong Kong Church Services Limited and many others. His music is recorded on Zimbel Records.

Apart from mainly being a composer, Yu remains active as a performer and teacher. As a pianist or collaborative pianist, he played a diverse repertoire and collaborated with numerous instrumentalists and vocalists. Since the age 18 he already started premiering his own works on stages overseas and locally. Recently Yu has founded the Hong Kong Amadeus Chamber Orchestra, appearing as a conductor for promoting educational concerts "Mozart Effects" in public. As a music lecturer, Yu taught advanced music theory and composition in various tertiary colleges and universities since 2007.
