NCPCF Town Hall, 1/15/12
The National Coalition to Protect Civil Freedoms (NCPCF) held a town hall meeting on Sunday, 1/15/12 to raise awareness of "preemptive prosecutions," the growing practice of prosecuting Muslim Americans on vague and trumped up conspiracy or material support charges -- before a real crime has been committed. Family members and friends of some victims of this practice were on hand to tell their stories; civil rights advocates also demonstrated the do's and don'ts of handling a knock on the door by the FBI.
Close Guantanamo Rally, 1/11/12
A coalition of groups including the National Religious Campaign Against Torture, Amnesty International, and the Center for Constitutional Rights held rallies in Washington DC to commemorate and protest ten years of Guantanamo detention policies, as well as the recently passed new indefinite detention provisions in the NDAA (National Defense Authorization Act).
Youth curfew discussion, Youth Town Hall 10/12/11
The Montgomery County Council held a Youth Town Hall on Wednesday, October 12 to discuss issues concerning 4th to 12th graders in the county. The most frequent topic of discussion was the youth curfew proposed by County Executive Ike Leggett; it was strongly, eloquently, and cogently criticized by several young people before, during, and after the Town Hall.
'Creeping Shariah' myth forum, 9/24/11, Chevy Chase
A forum organized by the Montgomery Civil RIghts Coalition and former state delegate Saqib Ali was held on 9/24 in the context of a private appearance, later in the day, by ex-Congressman Fred Grandy -- a leading purveyor of Islamophobia and the 'creeping Shariah' myth -- at a Chevy Chase Republican women's club. Speakers at our forum included Saqib Ali, student activist Elizabeth Lakew, State Senator and constitutional law professor Jamie Raskin, Shahid Buttar (BORDC), Professor Sulayman Nyang (Howard U.), and Corey Saylor (CAIR).

UDC bag search symposium, 4/7/11
Together with the ACLU of the Nation's Capital, students at the University of the District of Columbia David A. Clarke School of Law organized a "Know Your Rights, Know the Law" symposium on the Metro bag search issue. Panelists included Mike German (ACLU), Andrew Taslitz (Howard U. Law), Jim Harper (CATO Institute), Jim Wedick (fbiexpert.com), and David Alpert (Metro Riders Advisory Council/Greater Greater Washington). The symposium was addressed by Hope Goins, Counsel to the House Homeland Security Committee, and moderated by Prof. Andrew Ferguson of UDC Law.
March 3 bag search opponent press conference
The ACLU-NCA organized a press conference on Thursday in front of the WMATA building to announce a campaign against bag searches, including an appeal for those stopped by bag searches to come forward as witnesses and possible plaintiffs in litigation. Among the speakers were Johnny Barnes (ACLU-NCA), Amy Cruice (ACLU-MD), Mike German (ACLU Natl. Legislative Office, ex-FBI), UDC Law students Aisha Ching and Samantha Holley, Thomas Nephew (MCCRC), Sue Udry (DCCLC), and Mike Mage (ACLU-Montg.Cnty).
