Yuejia Sanshou, Qinna, Small Shuai and Fun...
Some basic practical ideas with my students...
Again, these ideas here are very raw in approach and energy, as I am refining via the practical practices. I use my students in a raw approach so they can get the basic foundations of the ideas and connected flow of the two people, by simple transmission through the playing. I allow them to use power and force if they catch me then great, its a learning process after all...
I use my students as training partners (not students with no skill) and as myself practicing ideas so i can learn deeper of the internal mechanisms and connections. What looks subtle, soft and flowery is nothing of the kind. I am around 5ft1 and 135 lbs, I cannot use power to do what I show, its logistics, size and strength, all which I just don't have...
Here is a great comment, translated from a chinese forum...
"Good, it really shows how Taiji can make the small overcome the strong. In the first clip, the foreign students use physical force, dumb strength against their teacher. They have not grasped Taiji's usage of smart power; their waists and upperbodies are too stiff, they don't have twisting and turning, their centers move along with their strength, once their teacher dissolves their power they will immediately lose their balance. They have not yet understand the theory of the necessity of having both Yin and Yang, upward and downward powers, left and right movements etc. In the second clip is all pushing exercises, to test the Zhanzhuang/stances. We welcome Mike Laoshi to Beijing this summer for cultural exchange."
I want to share because it explains exactly what I am trying to achieve myself and to teach the foundations to my students...
It is hard ideas because one needs to be soft but not empty, relaxed and full as to be able to allow someone else's force to be placed on our body for feedback... If the force causes the muscles, tendons to get stiffness's then more relaxed practicing conditioning is needed... Conversely when is able to have a huge a force on them relaxed then one needs to play with the force softly to exercise the inner connections to build stronger... Yin reinforces Yang, without Yang getting stiff and so on....
Of course these are all training methods that allow two people to play soft or strong, but not get to hurt and explore methods and train the IMA...
I hope all enjoy objectively. mike martello

Yuejia Sanshou and fun...
Some basic practical ideas with my students for Yuejia Sanshou and Basic Shuia ideas...
These ideas here are very raw in approach and energy, as I am refining myself via the practical practice. I use my students in a raw approach so they can get the basic foundations of the ideas and connected flow of the two people, by simple transmission through the playing. I allow them to use power and force if they catch me then great, its a learning process after all...
Many things happen at this stage a few are, I get to practice by appling and exploring, two, the student gets a good feel how to work the ideas, three, we both get a great workout and its loads of fun to boot... Plus there are to many benifits to list...
So then what do I use, duh...
Lately I am getting trashed on outside blogs and forums boards for what I do and show? and really what am I doing but trying to grow, help and better myself, and I get trashed for it by trolls.... Does it matter NO, do I care? A little...Can I please everyone? Was never my goal at all..
First I want to say thank you to all the positive people that leaves wonderful comments and send beyond nice emails... And all the questions I get, I try to answer everyone... Sorry if it take a while but there are a lot...
Second I put videos out there just for criticisms but constructive criticisms, of course I know people will write BS, whatever....
I am kind of tired of being trashed by so many critics that never show there stuff but only talk like paper tigers, and keyboard not-it-alls... You know constructive criticism is great but the kind that degrades a person by just watching a few videos is another thing. I mean I know I am no master but yet people persist to trash me, as if I am, I openly admit I am learning and people take it like i am being cocky in attitude... I say fuk off to these people, and grow up... Sheesh there demo vids and training vids...
Unless there are heads flying and blood gushing people will make critics like; "he knees wiggle and he has no inner power, he just looks soft and see he moves like a flower, he is not connected in movement, he doesn't do it like the style should look like (chen, bagua vids) and not like all the chinese masters that move so powerful, and the bullshit goes on and on..."...
I mean I even wrote in the Chen vid notes about what and why I feel about CMA/IMA ideas , why I stopped and train differently... and yet people take it twist it and attack me....
At least make a video response instead of hide in some forum and be a fuken man and show everyone the correct way of walking... I didn't know I suck so bad... Holy mother of bat shit, LOL... And none of them have ever met me...
I didn't know a pebble could cause a tidal wave...
I hope all enjoy objectively. mike martello

Okay why this, Part II? I have been getting many e-mails and questions about my stretch vids... Many like them, Thanks more to come, and many think they are, well, to aggressive or violent as one said, and that I am bouncing and I should not be stretching that way because I will get hurt, it should be gentle and relaxing and yadda yadda blah blah...
I made it smaller so its not so long to watch....
For more info: mikes-vid@wutang.be
------ Excerpt from DVD and Book to come --------- .......Martial Warming Up and Stretching.......
As a martial artist "athletic warm-ups" are good to fit into your training but do not have the foundations that are needed to your martial goals (i.e. martial warming up). Cross training is beneficial but it should also fit your goals of training, for example; a runner doing warm-ups does not do weight lifters warm-ups or a martial artist doing warm-ups does not do tennis warm-ups. Although the end result of a warm-up should be the same, to raise your core body temperature to get your blood flowing and body warm, the means of the warm-up should reflect in what foundations you are building. Your goals in these early stages should be to build; subtleness, flexibility, pliability, resilience, springiness, strength and endurance conditioning into your martial arts growth.
As a martial artist over time you should extend your knowledge beyond your style and begin to research and understand physical fitness training and body mechanics. Many athletic and traditional warm-up and stretch routines are antiquated, physically damaging and can be counter productive to your future growth as a martial artist.
All people, especially martial artists, regardless of their style, are prone to injury. Most common injuries can be avoided with correct training and are usually due to improper warm-up, improper stretching, and most of all, poor technique and teaching. Lack of flexibility due to inefficient warm up and stretching is the main cause of poor physical performance as well as a reason for many joint strains and tear injuries (muscle and tendon). Warming up can do more than just loosen stiff muscles; when done properly, it can actually improve performance, increased awareness, improved coordination, improve elasticity and contractibility of muscles, and a greater efficiency of the respiratory and cardiovascular systems. -------------------------------------------------- Well I am 40 now, and have fixed all previous sport injuries I attained through training, due to the fact that teachers teach wrong, never say or can show principle, and we just don't know or see it for ourselves!!!! The western problem is just that we are not taught deep enough about proper mechanics of our bodies. Sure we can recite the bible of stretching and so on, but we just don't internalize enough into daily lives down to the bone... Its not our culture to probe the body and mind this way.... So injuries occur and we believe the BS that goes around or why we get injured and then our training suffers!!!
The combined IMA/CMA flexibility, agility, stretching and strengthening and so on, are advanced foundation building blocks for those who want more from their body and there body to grow old gracefully.
In contrast IMA/CMA is not sport training and therefore we should not sport warmup the same way as for tennis or for basketball. I am all for cardio and physical fitness, but not in a sport way anymore.
My idea is after achieving sport fitness, look to attain training deeper through the IMA ways of building the body here forth... Just look to the vids of teacher Wang in his 80's, he is a living example of what and why I train this way... Human bodies are not geared for sport and core strength in old age, as we get older weakness sets in and this is what and why we must train...
IMA/CMA training is just that, it allows oneself to see more that just fighting, but the fight is inside with oneself... Ones daily life style, work, bills, spouses, family and so on... The fighting skills are just a by-product of practicing and self defense skills are attained... Sport fighting and IMA/CMA for me are two very different animals... I am getting older why would I practice to hurt myself, instead I practice to live longer and healthier...
This time I am NOT Sorry for the rant!
I hope all enjoy objectively... mike martello
