FAQs:
*WHO AM I?
I am an incoming UC Berkeley freshman (Class of 2013) majoring in Civil Engineering and aiming to preserve Asian Architecture.
*WHAT DO I USE YOUTUBE FOR?
I make videos of segments of East Asian Architecture whenever I can.
Asian Architecture can be very complex and detailed, and each detail has its own significant meaning. Sometimes, the information is very difficult to find on the Internet (especially if you do not know the [Chinese, Korean, or Japanese] language, like me). Therefore, I gather what I have researched and combine them into user-friendly videos for the public.
*WHY DO I AIM TO PRESERVE ASIAN ARCHITECTURE?
As a Chinese-American, I often have a hard time understanding my Asian-American culture. I'm not fluent in Cantonese or Mandarin, and there was a lack of emphasis toward being culturally aware of my identity throughout most of my youth.
Understanding one's cultural identity is important because one, according to UCB's Hardboiled Magazine, should "not be erased" from America's culturally diverse fabric and heritage. We are all individuals, so might as well empower ourselves as individuals.
After reading about the model minority stereotype, and understanding the need to empower Asian-American cultural values, especially when future generations may face having a limited understanding of their heritage, I decided to focus much of my high school life in educating myself about the issues within the Asian-American community.
Seeing that Asian-American activism didn't seem like my strength, I headed over to architecture to expose the beauties of our culture.
Preserving Asian Architecture is a metaphor for me to retain (or help evolve) as much of my culture as possible, especially in a time of urbanizing Asia, and a time of an increasingly changing Asian-American youth and its cultural values.
