In 2010 the Maronite church celebrated the 1600 Jubilee of the death of Saint Maroun, father of the Maronite Church, who died in 410A.D. St. Maroun's way was deeply monastic with emphasis on the spiritual and ascetic aspects of living.
"The Maronite Church of Antioch and the rest of the East" is known as one of the 22 rites of the Catholic Church. Its language and liturgy is Aramaic (West Syriac accent) and it is lead by the Patriarch. The current Patriarch is Mor Bchara Peter Rai who was elected on March 15 2011 as a successor to Mor Nasralla Peter Sfeir who, at 92 years old and with humbleness an piety, resigned as a Patriarch, and entered his cell for prayer after serving 25 years as a Patriarch.
Antioch is one of the five early churches along with, Alexandria (Egypt), Jerusalem (Holy Land), Constantinople (today in Turkey) and Rome (Italy).
The Seat had been always located in different places of Lebanon since the Maronites took it in the sixth century, because of the persecutions, started by byzantian and followed by Arab invasion, Mamlouk and Ottomans etc.
"Lebanon is more than a country. It is a message of freedom and an example of pluralism for East and West." said Blessed Pope John Paul II during his visit to Lebanon in 1997.
The Seat was always built with a Church of Our Lady, Yannouh, Ilige, Qannoubine, Bkerke, Dimane etc.
The icon on the top left of the screen shows a maronite cross with 3 horizontal bars symbol of The Holy Trinity. This cross contains the Cedar of God, symbol of Lebanon, home country of the maronites after escaping persecutions.
