Rerooting Blythe Doll Hair - CRAFT Video Podcast makemagazine - 16,411 views - 6 months ago
I started getting interested in Blythe when I wanted to make a three-dimensional self portrait, and was dumbfounded by the enormous community of customizers working with the Blythe Doll. One of the main online sources for customization is Puchi Collective, which houses oodles of tops for changing her eyechips, face makeup, and clothes. I was mainly interested in rerooting her hair, as the doll I acquired from co-blogger Jenny Ryan had blonde hair, and I wanted to use my own wavy red hair from a recent haircut. I made this video to illustrate the process, based on text-and-image tutorials I found on Puchi and Flickr. Antique Sock Knitting Machines - CRAFT Video Podcast makemagazine - 9,661 views - 6 months ago
I caught up with Shelly Hatton at Maker Faire Austin, where she was demonstrating antique circular sock knitting machines! She writes, "Circular sock machines have been around since the early 1900's and were built so sturdily that they still survive and work to this day. The machines were originally advertised as a way for homemakers to make money at home by cranking out socks, but the learning curve was really high. Currently, there are a number of enthusiasts around the globe who help each other figure out how to use these really nifty antique machines." Shelly got interested in these machines when she heard a friend had knitted a pair of sock in two hours!

How-to Tuesday: Maker's Notebook contest makemagazine - 37,437 views - 5 months ago
This week I have 3 modifications of the Maker's Notebook. I started out by adding a small pocket inside the book to keep a pen. Next, I added a snap closure to keep everything secure. Finally, I added a pocket to the back of the book for keeping acetate film to use as overlays for my sketches.

Checkout makezine for more information, including a contest for the 3 best mods! [Contest ends 1.19.09]

How-to Tuesday: Hacking a MAKE gift subscription card makemagazine - 21,353 views - 6 months ago
This week I am going to show you how to hack a MAKE gift subscription card. Actually, it's showing you how to interface a 7-segment display with an Arduino. I just happened to make it into a gift card subscription.

My idea was to give a MAKE subscription to a friend. Actually, I am giving them an Arduino along with the subscription. What a great combination! As a final part of the gift, I am making a post on how to program the 7-segment display to help them get started.
