Shotguns cause massive tissue damage, which makes them more effective. Pistol rounds tend to just bore a tunnel through the target. Unless you hit a vital organ, a pistol round isn't necessarily going to help you much, especially if the attacker's on drugs.

A 12-gauge shell, on the other hand... well, it doesn't matter how drugged up they are, they can't continue to function if their heart and lungs are nothing but red paste now.

Jane, it isn't hard at all to get a gun in the US. At least, not in Texas. I literally walked into a sporting good store and walked out with a new Remington 870 about 20 minutes later. Most of the time spent was just filling out a registration form.

Handguns are a different story, of course. But Long Guns (Shotguns and Rifles) are extremely easy to get your hands on, and generally cost much less than handguns as well.

Handguns are really only useful for concealed-carry self defense. For home defense, a Shotgun's always better. A 12-guage blast will drop a target for sure, whereas a pistol round (even a .45) won't necessary drop an attacker or home invader on the first, or even second or third shot.
