Kaiwanoshima, talking island in English is a professional documentary film maker.
We had come to know James Scarlett, tartan expert, during the course of our filming in the Scottish Highlands and eventually became friends.
Kaiwanoshima in 2010 celebrates his life on the second anniversary of his death. He received a MBE for his contribution to Tartan. Indeed he spent nearly 40 years studying tartan having lived in the heart of the Scottish Highlands. He was also a tartan weaver and a prolific designer.

Kaiwanoshima made a series of short films on Highland tartans where he took a vital role both in the films and behind the scenes. 2 of these films are shown on the free channel in 'a mill window', Kaiwanoshima website. The films were chosen to echo the importance of keeping the Scottish tartans' tradition.

In early 2007, he was contacted by the head of the project team launching the Registry of Tartans who visited him at his home in Moy near Inverness later in the year for a consultation.

James strongly recommended an index called 'SINDEX'. He prepared a draft of how he was going to present his recommendation prior to their first meeting and emailed it to Kaiwanoshima. He wrote, 'Tartan Database - the card index "SINDEX" developed by the Scottish Tartans Society is by far the best system on offer but it grew from about two hundred cards to about two-and-a-half thousand without very much extra thought going into it and has long been in need of an overhaul. Careful computerization could be extremely beneficial.'

James was hopeful after the series of meetings took place at his home between 2007 and February 2008 due to the positive impressions left.

However, when the Scottish Register of Tartans was finally launched, SINDEX was ignored. According to http://www.tartanregister.gov.uk/, the Scottish Register of Tartans was launched on 5th February 2009. It is a national repository of tartan designs and an on-line website database facility maintained by the National Archives of Scotland, an executive agency of the Scottish Government. And they have chosen still images of tartan patterns for its database.

Although one should appreciate their decision, SINDEX is an invaluable resource not only for the preservation of the history of tartan sdudies, but for scrutinising the accuracy of the chosen system.
