Retired Principal Goes From Heart Failure to Success Thanks to Kaiser Permanente

In 2000 Susan Mahler was diagnosed with congestive heart failure. Medication and the care she received at Kaiser Permanente San Diego Medical Center sustained her until 2003, when breathing became difficult. During surgery to replace some of Susan's heart valves, her doctors found that the left side of her heart had stopped working and she was put on the waiting list for a new heart. With medical care, Susan was able to stay healthy until 2009 when the right side of her heart and her internal organs began to fail. The following year, Susan received a heart transplant.
