JCM Digital Imaging Primary Channel

Time lapse and long exposure photography can make even the most mundane things more interesting, and flying sparks from a fireplace chimney are no exception. In these scenes, a Canon 5D Mk2 DSLR and HS300 DSC were used to capture the short-lived burning embers from a fireplace as they exited the chimney against the night sky. The moon, stars, clouds and aircraft passed overhead as the sparks flew through the scene, leaving bright orange-red traces of their passage.

Various compositing techniques were used to extend the on-sceen-time of the trails, while a digital mirroring technique (called "quadroscopic imaging") was used to create a hypnotic and tunnel-like artistic version of some scenes. All material used to create these scenes was filmed in Santa Clarita in January, 2013.
