Ugh, Biographies are boring!
In order not to kill anybody's (including mine's) buzz and get too formal, I decided to ask a friend of mine to write a biography-ish introduction of me. He made me look a lot better than I think I am. But hey, a crazy person writing about a crazy person. What can the text be except crazy?
All right, well here start my friends ravings:
"In this world, most of the people you meet fit some kind of a preconceived bracket. You know, accountants, hippies, glam rockers, anxiety-laden Satanists, and so on. Then there are those who defy any pigeonholing and just blow your mind. They're something you don't see every day. When you run into that kind of people, you find yourself thinking out loud, almost channeling the intoxicated confusion of Hunter S. Thompson: "Jesus Christ!
What are these goddamn animals?"
Freaks of nature. Oddballs. Characters. Or, politely put, unique personalities and individuals.
Heikki Malmberg is definitely one of them.
He is what you'd get if you combined the creativity of a mad scientist, the sophistication of a trained classical composer from the early 20th century, the discipline and determination of a Spartan general and the motor abilities of a three-brain-yogi-turned-gymnast, and make the package pop up somewhere in southern Finland.
Having had the privilege and pleasure to play with this dynamo of musical madness, there were certain aspects that had my jaw hitting the floor and fillings of my teeth popping out. Heikki's sheer power, accuracy and overall awareness of what is musically happening in the room were the first things that I noticed. I also soon became aware that the guy has his own style with the drum kit, that his ideas sound new, original, complex and yet musical -- and that he's executing with apparent ease things that require so much limb independence and polyrhythmic knowledge that they would make your average drummer weep for his mommy, give up music and become a jazz critic.
Not being a one trick pony that merely draws from his mastery on the drums, Heikki has been cutting down on live work since 2007 in order to focus on composing and producing. He's got his own group that serves as a science lab for his compositional (human) experiments, and the beauty and sophistication of his music echoes such greats as Stravinsky, Keneally, Thordendal, Mangini, Bartok and Slonimsky. And by the way, he doesn't swing the drumsticks in this outfit. He's the lead guitar player.
Throughout the years, Heikki has recorded and performed with various acts such as Diablo, Manzana, Dame and Stam1na. Nowadays he also teaches, composes and runs his own production company called Halfway House Music Production. God only knows what he'll come up with next, but I'm utterly certain it's going to blow your wee mind."
