Gary/N5ANF and I scrambled up Mt Herman (9054') on Black Friday for some QRP fun. Gary was operating his FT817 pedestrian mobile using his rather novel helically wound windom on a 9' whip mounted on his pack frame with MFJ tunner which worked great! I was operating mtn-top portable with my IC703 and Buddipole vertical. Conditions were ok but we were still plagued with that deep QSB of late. We tried to operate on separate bands 20/17/15 but found desensing to be an issue as we were only 20yards from one another! So we took turns running the 17m SSB-HFpack. All in all us goats had a great time!

This video features SOTA (Summits On The Air), Polar Bears, the Goats, QRP, a little SSB thrown in (HFpack), CW, Morse code, APRS, FT-817s & IC-703s, portable antennas and most of all having FUN with ham radio. And our plans to hike up the mountain were foiled by a Colorado snow storm ...thus us goats never left the barn!

I took my rig and went and sat up on the hill next to my tower that holds up my center fed zepp. We had almost a full moon with a light breeze. Still at 38 degrees it felt like zero but was great fun!? The goats didn't mind the clod temps but could not figure out what I was doing and soon left grazing their way back to the goat barn.
I was plagued with antenna issues throughout the evening nothing serious. But had a loose connection somewhere I just couldn't locate ...drove me nuts! Started on 40m which faded quickly then dropped to 80m where I spent the rest of the chilly evening.
Made about a dozen QSOs! Some guys were we all business but most we're in QRP 'test mode of exchanging 73's, GL and TUs ...nice and casual. Worked one station who didn't know what the SP was so I chatted a bit with him. He couldn't get over the fact I was sitting out in the cold playing radio! Ha. Ya donno know what your missing till you try it!

Regardless if they've changed venues and the reporting web sites on us several times the Spartan Sprint remains a fun contest in my mind. It's kind of a like monthly road test for your portable rigs and skills! Hope to see you in Dec's SP!

This one is a short hike I did in July'09 with the 'boys' and my ATS3a while looking for some items I lost on FD. A thunder storm rolls up on us so we QRT'd early to dodge the wet. Peanut gets into 'what's in my pack' with his 10-essentails list and Rooster has a message for all of us at the end! Some QRP radio, more goat and fun!
