At Vassar College, we have been teaching courses with geographic information system (GIS) software since 1994. Our GIS Lab in Ely Hall opened in 1998 and has been a space dedicated to teaching and learning with geospatial software and hardware. We currently employ 16 Windows XP desktop workstations and 15 mobile tablet PCs used primarily for instruction with GIS software. Our GIS program expanded in 2004 with the addition of tablet PCs and we are able to take computer-based projects and mapping exercises outdoors.

We teach with ArcGIS ArcView, Google Earth and other virtual globes, global positioning system (GPS) receivers, remote sensing software, and other modeling, graphical and statistical software useful for geospatial visualization.
