Biography:Toronto artist Gareth Bate works in painting, installation, photography, video, performance, set design and online.
The relationships between people and the environment, our place in the universe, and a search for personal meaning are principle themes in Gareth's work. It addresses the spiritual in a naturalistic world view. His approach is intuitive, and emotionally driven with a strong interest in experimenting with materials.
Gareth Bate graduated from Toronto's Ontario College of Art and Design in 2007, and the adult art program at Central Tech in 2005. He is the winner of the 401 Richmond Career-Launcher Prize, a 500 square foot studio given to one OCAD BFA graduate for one year. He has won the Ron Shuebrook Award for Painting and the George A. Reid Award for Art Writing. He has shown at a number of Toronto galleries including Glendon, DeLeon White, Loop, Bau-Xi, Gallery 44, Gladstone Hotel, Arcadia, Royal Conservatory of Music, Toronto Outdoor Art Exhibition, 401 Richmond, and has exhibited in Contact, Nuit Blanche and The World of Threads Festival. His work has been featured in the Toronto Star, Globe & Mail, Now, Xtra, the global warming magazine Checkerspot, Radio Canada, Liberty & Annex Gleaner, L'Express, OCAD's Canvas, Snap Toronto and online in Torontoist, Things of Desire and Lytearts.
