About this user

The mission of the Armenian EyeCare Project is to eliminate preventable blindness in Armenia and to provide eye care for all Armenians in need. Blindness is devastating, but more than 80 percent of all blindness is either preventable or treatable. We do this through a five-point program, which includes (1) direct patient care—specialty clinics (Glaucoma, Retina, Pediatrics, Low Vision, Cornea, Neuro, mobile eye hospital, schools, community centers; (2) medical education and training; (3) public education; (4) research; and (5) capacity building. We have a state-of-the-art mobile eye hospital which travels throughout the country of Armenia providing eye examinations and surgery. In 2009, we saw nearly 75,000 patients in our specialty clinics and on the mobile eye hospital. We restored the sight of more than 1,000 through surgery (primarily Cataract). Our most recent Initiative is the elimination of infant blindness from ROP (Retinopathy of Prematurity). The rate of infant blindness in Armenia is three times what it is in the U.S. and it is preventable. Through a partnership with USC and Children's Hospital in Los Angeles we are training Armenian physicians in the diagnosis and treatment of this disease to save the sight of 600 babies at risk every year.
