As a kid, growing up in South Texas, I used to mess around with a Super 8 home movie camera.
I rehearsed my actors—my older sister and little brother—and yelled "Action!"
Maybe the film got too expensive? But at some point I put down the camera and took up my dad's manual typewriter.
For nearly two decades now I've been working as a freelance writer in New York. My personal essays have appeared in The New York Times and aired on NPR. I'm a regular contributor to the Daily News and I've written a few books, including the ebook "Once More to the River: Family Snapshots of Growing Up, Getting Out and Going Back."
Recently I picked up shooting "film" again. I use my iPhone, a Kodak Zi8 and, at times, a borrowed Canon 5D.
I don't know what happened to that Super 8 camera. But these clips bring together an early love and my current life. These videos are "home movies" of friends, fellow writers and excerpts from my own work.
Hope you enjoy them.
