I am a cultural sociologist. My professional interests are cultural and educational social class inequalities. When I am not weighted down by these depressing issues, above all I am a theatre and classical cinema lover, and a film collector (mainly of silent and pre-fifties films, old and new French films, and stage-to-film adaptations). My favourite Shakespeare: King Lear, Hamlet, Richard II, Henry V, As You Like It. My favourite modern stage play is probably Peter Shaffer's The Royal Hunt of the Sun. My favourite contemporary film director is Claude Chabrol, and La Cérémonie my favourite among his films. I really have too many other favourite films to make a list... My favourite novels are probably Joyce's A Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man and Woolf's Orlando, but also love Emile Zola very much. My favourite music is baroque. What else? I have had many (more or less temporary) all-consuming cultural obsessions in my life, and since my childhood I have always had a permanent obsession with cats.
