Ice Cold Idiots: The Best Band Ever?


New music comes across our desks every day, arriving courtesy of hype-happy publicists, managers, and labels promising the latest, greatest, coolest band of all time. Far more often than not, they're big, honking disappointments. It gets to be a real drag. Every once in awhile, though, we stumble across a band that reminds us of what is great about rock and roll, and playing music, and being in a band.

And that is just what happened yesterday, when we discovered Ice Cold Idiots—not through a publicist or a press release, but from a YouTube clip that was winding its way through an email train. Ice Cold Idiots are two 10-year-olds and one 11-year-old—Fred, Harry, and Morgan, three shaggy-haired kids who met at football camp and found common ground in their love of classic rock and making music. Together, they wield drums, guitar, and bass to perform righteous covers of Led Zeppelin, AC/DC, and Black Sabbath—songs that are older than all their ages combined. Seeing these three pre-teens tear into the Undertones' "Teenage Kicks," is enough to reaffirm your faith in rock and roll. No matter how focus-grouped, over-produced, big-bizzed, and segmented music may get, Ice Cold Idiots are a reminder that there will always be a few kids in a basement or a garage somewhere cranking up their amps and pushing their way through great songs, learning as they go, for the sheer thrill of it. So are Ice Cold Idiots the best band ever? You never know.... they sure made our day.
