Office of the Chancellor
About Me:

The CSU is a leader in high-quality, accessible, student-focused higher education. With 23 campuses, almost 450,000 students, and 47,000 faculty and staff, we are the largest, the most diverse, and one of the most affordable university systems in the country. We offer unlimited opportunities to help students achieve their goals. We prepare graduates who go on to make a difference in the workforce. We engage in research and creative activities leading to scientific, technical, artistic and social advances. And we play a vital role in the growth and development of California's communities and economy.

That's what it means to be a leader.

That's the California State University.

Please pardon a comment from the North, but has this guy ever actually stepped on a university campus? How do professors 'take a furlough'?
MsCate2010 (4 months ago)
I can't stand watching this guy...is he going to take a 10% salary cut?
wiinerd1120 (4 months ago)
I voted against the furlough plan as I think it will weaken the CSU system in the long run. A ten percent pay cut to professors (who don't earn much to begin with $55,000 - $75,000, usually) increases the likelihood that top professors will jump ship and accept better offers at other colleges and universities that can pay more competitive salaries. The alternate layoff plan would have allowed the system to cut out some deadwood. In every system there IS deadwood. Many part-timers and maybe even some minor departments would have carried the brunt of the hit but the CSU could have emerged leaner and more efficient, in my analysis. Oh, well. It is painful no matter which way you slice it, but if the state doesn't have revenues to pay for education and social programs, it doesn't have the money and painful cuts must happen.

lets get rid of the chancellors's office...

save tons of money. let university presidents run their own campuses...
HoofHeartedFilms (4 months ago)
What a crock of you know what! The Chancelor's office mandates that each campus spends boatloads on CMS (which only bennefits the chancelor's office) and then raises student fees, furloughs employees and stagnates enrollment. Great work Mr. Reed! You sunk CSU just like you did the last place you worked.

This is so typical of administration responses; Cut the lowest paying employees and raise the students education costs (which you claim to care so much about!) But never even consider cutting your bloated pay and perks! It is public knowledge that CSUC's President with housing and transportation perks is making close to $300,000!!! most workers make under $40,000.00 and 9 month'ers even less!!! Every administrative position that is making over $200,000
should cut their pay by 50%. I sure wish I could live on $100.000 a year! I know you will do this because you "care" so much about the "student" and workers that make you pay avalable to you!

@wildoklane0: The role of Government, even according to a Libertarian ethic, is to provide infrastrucure. In the modern world, an educated populace is a valuable part of our economic infrastructure. Dollars spent on education result in a skilled workforce that earns more and can be taxed in a non-burdensome fashion to keep the system operating. It is unwise to destroy infrastructure for short term monetary savings, yet that is exactly what California is doing.

Let me be clear - what I posted earlier was sarcasm - indicative of the "no new taxes" attitude that got us to where we are as a state today.

Government shouldn't be in the the business of education, just like it shouldn't be in the business of health care. Individuals should earn and pay for their own education.
