A child born prematurely with complications can put a lot of stress on the family, but when Deranne was born her family found comfort thanks in part to the WHAS Crusade for Children.
All five of the nerves that controlled her left arm and hand were severed when her shoulder was displaced during delivery.
Deranne had a 13 hour surgery at Kosair Children's Hospital, which receives funding from the Crusade, to help her get muscle movement back. Today as a first grader she is slowly but surely getting more and more use of the arm she calls "Lefty."
Deranne’s father Derrick is a 15 year volunteer with the Leitchfield Fire Department. He says that raising money for the Crusade was always important, but now it has become a family priority.
