Every year, kala azar kills more than 50,000 thousand people worldwide. A neglected disease, the treatment for it was developed in the 1930s and requires a long, painful course of intra-muscular injections. The treatment is also prohibitively expensive for many of those who have the disease. In Kacheliba, West Pokot District, Kenya, MSF provides free treatment for kala azar.

A little known disease that doctors claim is the most neglected of all abandoned diseases continues to wreck havoc in the country's remote areas. Kala Azar, a disease that is fatal if left untreated, is still highly endemic in West Pokot, Turkana and Wajir with 4,000 people infected every year. While the disease is treatable, little attention has been paid to developing new drugs, a major setback that continues to see patients undergo month-long admissions in hospital, and one hospital at that for the entire Pokot and Turkana Counties.

In this clip from the pilot episode, young Kwai Chang Caine (Grasshopper) and Shaolin Master Po meet for the first time. Master Po is quick to demonstrate to Grasshopper that great virtue is often hidden behind assumed misfortune.
This video was taken from the 1970's TV series 'Kung Fu' (Created by Ed Spielman, Herman Miller and Jerry Thorpe). It is essentially an American Western set in the latter half of the 1800's, with an Eastern hero who has neither a gun or a horse. The story follows the adventures of Kwai Chang Caine (David Carradine); a nature loving Shaolin priest, who recently fled China. He speaks softly but is no pushover. He lives humbly yet knows great contentment.
Each episode also takes the viewer back to Caine's childhood in the Shaolin temple. It is here under the instruction of the wonderfully charismatic Master Po (Keye Luke) and the stern yet loving Master Kan (Philip Ahn), young Caine (Radames Pera) learns the harmoniously balanced ways of Tao.
The teachings of the Shaolin was meticulously researched for the Kung Fu series. This makes Kung Fu one of the most authentic interpretations of Philosophical Taoism available in popular culture. I was therefore surprised to see no one else had presented selected scenes from Kung Fu as an introduction to the Taoist philosophy. This is one of about 30 clips I'll be posting here during 2008.

Filmed in 1963, from the Italian documentary "La Donna Nel Mundo." Narrated in English by Peter Ustinov, its aim is to explore how different life is for women in the many cultures of the world. This is one of the particularly humorous sections of the film.
Before anyone pounces on my obvious naïvete (or gets their hopes up): it's likely that some of this is made up. I tried to find the proper spelling for the tribe "Hibeto" with no luck. Seeing as how this documentary is very much in the Mondo genre, it's entirely possible that the filmmakers had some natives doll up for the cameras, get the woman to haul some bundles, and put on a good show. To be fair, the opposite is also just as possible... there simply isn't enough evidence either way. These old documentarians didn't exactly cite source material. Enjoy it for what it is: entertainment.
