International outcry at Houla 'massacre'

An emergency meeting of the United Nations Security Council was called on Sunday amid international outrage over the killing of more than 100 civilians, including dozens of children, in the Syrian town of Houla. The UNSC meeting came as the warring sides in Syria, and international diplomats, offered differing accounts of what happened. The head of the UN observer mission in Syria, Gen Robert Mood, was due to address the emergency meeting after his teams reported back from the stricken area. In Houla and abroad, meanwhile, the killings sparked demonstrations by Syrians opposed to the rule of President Bashar al-Assad.

Thousands take part in Brazilian 'slutwalk'

Thousands of women across Brazil staged colorful, noisy 'slutwalks' on Saturday, May 26. Dubbed the 'Marcha das Vadias' (Bitch walk), the protests drew those who wanted to protest rape, confront macho culture, promote LGBT equality and even stand up for the right to breastfeed in public. A man who taunted marchers in Brasilia, in an area known for street prostitution at night, found himself pelted with fruit and vegetables before he was taken into the care of police.

Space X Dragon berthed to the International Space Station

Aboard the International Space Station, Expedition 31 flight engineers Don Pettit of NASA, Andre Kuipers of the European Space Agency and Joe Acaba of NASA grappled and berthed the SpaceX Dragon spacecraft to the station's Harmony module, marking a milestone in spaceflight history. Dragon became the first commercially developed space vehicle to be launched to the station to join Russian, European and Japanese resupply craft that service the complex while restoring a U.S. capability to deliver cargo to the orbital laboratory. Dragon is scheduled to spend six days berthed to the station before being detached and released on May 31.

Twilight stars shine at Cannes Film Festival

Twilight stars Robert Pattinson and his co-star / girlfriend Kristen Stewart have caused a stir at Cannes, which they are attending for the of screening their respective films 'Cosmopolis' and 'On the Road'. The normally very private couple were also seen in an affectionate clinch at the after party for the David Cronenberg film 'Cosmopolis', in which Robert Pattinson plays a billionaire financier looking for a haircut, as a killer looks for him. The 10-day festival has attracted the biggest names in Cinema, and the jury selection for awards will take place on Sunday.

Scores of children killed in Houla 'massacre' (Graphic)

Over 90 people were killed during an attack by Syrian security forces on Houla, a town in the Homs province, on Friday. The victims reportedly included at least 25 children, some of whom died from shelling, while others appear to have been shot or bludgeoned to death as soldiers raided homes. The attacks come as UN observers are visiting the country to assess the security situation and help quell the ongoing violence.

Global human rights issues highlighted by official reports

Canadian pots and pans protests lead to arrests

A peaceful evening march in Montreal that began with people banging pots and pans in support of protesting students ended in the early morning hours with police kettling demonstrators and arresting 400 of them after officers were pelted with projectiles. There were also mass arrests at student protests in Quebec City and Sherbrooke.

Azerbajijan takes centre stage for week of global attention

Azerbajijan's capital Baku has been at the centre of global attention this week as it hosts the Eurovision Song Contest, which the group 'Sing for Democracy' claim has cost €628 million to host - including the construction of the 'Crystal Hall', a multipurpose venue which was completed in mid-April.. There have also been protests and incidents around the event, with 11 people arrested on suspicion of disseminating "anti-Eurovision" Islamist literature in Azerbajijan's capital Baku. The country has also chosen to use the global publicity this week to present a bid to the International Olympic Committee to host the 2020 Olympics.

Solar eclipse seen from Asia to western U.S.

As the Moon came between the Earth and the Sun to create a solar eclipse, people from Asia to western U.S. gazed at the sky to catch a glimpse of a rare phenomenon that turns the sun into a 'ring-of-fire'. This was the first annular eclipse in almost two decades, and this playlist brings together some of the spectacular footage captured by people on the ground, plus images captured by International Space Station astronaut Don Pettit of the shadow cast on Earth by the eclipse.

Space X rocket launches successfully

The California-based private company SpaceX has successfully carried out the lift-off of the first commercial supply flight to the International Space Station. An earlier planned launch was aborted over the weekend due to technical problems. The unmanned 178-foot tall Falcon 9 rocket lifted off from Cape Canaveral Air Force Station, and its Dragon capsule is due to spend a week at the space station before being cut loose and parachuting into the Pacific. NASA is counting on companies like Space Exploration Technologies, or SpaceX, to take over the task of flying cargo - and eventually astronauts - to the $100 billion space station, which orbits about 240 miles above Earth.

Anti-NATO protesters demonstrate on streets of Chicago

Hundreds of anti-NATO protesters wound through the streets of Chicago on Saturday night ahead of the opening of the NATO summit on Sunday. Some sections clashed with the Chicago police, although there were only about half a dozen arrests. The first video here shows Lithuanian president Dalia Grybauskaitė met by an angry protest shortly after her arrival to Chicago. Lithuanian protesters blocked her car and shouted at her in Lemont. Other videos show protesters practising non-violent civil disobedience and, later in the night, demonstrating loudly. However, as the last video shows, not everyone is against the summit: the restaurants of Chicago are celebrating the event.

Robin Gibb dies age 62.

Robin Gibb of Bee Gees died on Sunday following a long battle with cancer and intestinal surgery. He was one of the founding members of the Bee Gees and the following videos show some recent interviews with Robin and some of the classic Bee Gees songs from the 1980's.

Italy struck by quake and school blast

At least seven people were killed and scores injured when a 5.9M earthquake struck northern Italy on May 20. Residents fear that aftershocks will worsen the condition of factories and historic buildings already damaged by the quake. Meanwhile, the country is still reeling from a deadly bomb explosion in front of a school in the city of Brindisi. The blast on May 19 killed a teenage girl and wounded 10 others. No one has yet claimed responsibility for the attack.

2012 Olympic Torch Relay gets underway

Three-time Olympic sailing champion Ben Ainslie kicked off the London 2012 Olympic torch relay, waving and interacting with the cheering crowd of all ages at Land's End in Cornwall. Around 3,500 people were there to see the start of the relay, which will involve 8,000 torchbearers carrying the flame 8,000 miles to the opening ceremony on July 27th. The torch relay travels nationwide, and organisers aim to bring the Olympic Flame to within 95 per cent of the UK population. This playlist captures some the views from the ground as uploaded to YouTube.

SpaceX private space mission aborted

The private rocket company SpaceX had to abort the launch of its Dragon space capsule on a debut flight to the International Space Station, after unexpected engine pressure readings forced them to cancel Saturday's launch attempt at the last second. The launch countdown reached zero and the engines of the Falcon 9 rocket carrying Dragon ignited, only to be cut off seconds later because of an excessive pressure reading in one of the engines.
A news conference after the attempted launch was told the flight aborted at T minus 0.5 seconds. The commercial space capsule was due to make its inaugural flight to the orbiting space laboratory, becoming the first non-government craft to do so. The next launch opportunity is Tuesday at 3:44 a.m. EDT -and weather forecasters predict a 60 percent chance of good conditions for liftoff then.
