Week 1 of London 2012 Olympic Torch Relay

The Olympic Flame reached British shores nearly a week ago, and has slowly been making its way across the country since. The relay began at Land's End, with Plymouth, Taunton and Bristol just a few of the cities to have welcomed the flame so far, as it passes through approximately 8,000 pairs of hands on its 70 day journey. Global human rights issues highlighted by official reports

U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton, and Assistant Secretary for Human Rights Michael Posner, have released the '2011 Country Reports on Human Rights Practices' at the Department of State in Washington, D.C.. Amnesty International have also released their own Human Rights report, heavily condemning the UN security council for their lack of action on Syria. Canadian pots and pans protests lead to arrests

A peaceful evening march in Montreal that began with people banging pots and pans in support of protesting students ended in the early morning hours with police kettling demonstrators and arresting 400 of them after officers were pelted with projectiles. There were also mass arrests at student protests in Quebec City and Sherbrooke.

Azerbajijan takes centre stage for week of global attention

Azerbajijan's capital Baku has been at the centre of global attention this week as it hosts the Eurovision Song Contest, which the group 'Sing for Democracy' claim has cost €628 million to host - including the construction of the 'Crystal Hall', a multipurpose venue which was completed in mid-April.. There have also been protests and incidents around the event, with 11 people arrested on suspicion of disseminating "anti-Eurovision" Islamist literature in Azerbajijan's capital Baku. The country has also chosen to use the global publicity this week to present a bid to the International Olympic Committee to host the 2020 Olympics.

Egyptians vote in presidential poll

Egyptians were voting under tight security in historic presidential elections contested by Islamists and secularists promising radically different futures for the country. Early polls show that ex-foreign minister Amr Moussa, a secular liberal, may well gain victory over the Islamist candidate, even though 70% of Egyptian voters cast ballots for Islamist parties in parliamentary elections six months ago.

Solar eclipse seen from Asia to western U.S.

As the Moon came between the Earth and the Sun to create a solar eclipse, people from Asia to western U.S. gazed at the sky to catch a glimpse of a rare phenomenon that turns the sun into a 'ring-of-fire'. This was the first annular eclipse in almost two decades, and this playlist brings together some of the spectacular footage captured by people on the ground, plus images captured by International Space Station astronaut Don Pettit of the shadow cast on Earth by the eclipse.

Space X rocket launches successfully

The California-based private company SpaceX has successfully carried out the lift-off of the first commercial supply flight to the International Space Station. An earlier planned launch was aborted over the weekend due to technical problems. The unmanned 178-foot tall Falcon 9 rocket lifted off from Cape Canaveral Air Force Station, and its Dragon capsule is due to spend a week at the space station before being cut loose and parachuting into the Pacific. NASA is counting on companies like Space Exploration Technologies, or SpaceX, to take over the task of flying cargo - and eventually astronauts - to the $100 billion space station, which orbits about 240 miles above Earth.

Anti-NATO protesters demonstrate on streets of Chicago

Hundreds of anti-NATO protesters wound through the streets of Chicago on Saturday night ahead of the opening of the NATO summit on Sunday. Some sections clashed with the Chicago police, although there were only about half a dozen arrests. The first video here shows Lithuanian president Dalia Grybauskaitė met by an angry protest shortly after her arrival to Chicago. Lithuanian protesters blocked her car and shouted at her in Lemont. Other videos show protesters practising non-violent civil disobedience and, later in the night, demonstrating loudly. However, as the last video shows, not everyone is against the summit: the restaurants of Chicago are celebrating the event.

Robin Gibb dies age 62.

Robin Gibb of Bee Gees died on Sunday following a long battle with cancer and intestinal surgery. He was one of the founding members of the Bee Gees and the following videos show some recent interviews with Robin and some of the classic Bee Gees songs from the 1980's.

Italy struck by quake and school blast

At least seven people were killed and scores injured when a 5.9M earthquake struck northern Italy on May 20. Residents fear that aftershocks will worsen the condition of factories and historic buildings already damaged by the quake. Meanwhile, the country is still reeling from a deadly bomb explosion in front of a school in the city of Brindisi. The blast on May 19 killed a teenage girl and wounded 10 others. No one has yet claimed responsibility for the attack.

2012 Olympic Torch Relay gets underway

Three-time Olympic sailing champion Ben Ainslie kicked off the London 2012 Olympic torch relay, waving and interacting with the cheering crowd of all ages at Land's End in Cornwall. Around 3,500 people were there to see the start of the relay, which will involve 8,000 torchbearers carrying the flame 8,000 miles to the opening ceremony on July 27th. The torch relay travels nationwide, and organisers aim to bring the Olympic Flame to within 95 per cent of the UK population. This playlist captures some the views from the ground as uploaded to YouTube.

SpaceX private space mission aborted

The private rocket company SpaceX had to abort the launch of its Dragon space capsule on a debut flight to the International Space Station, after unexpected engine pressure readings forced them to cancel Saturday's launch attempt at the last second. The launch countdown reached zero and the engines of the Falcon 9 rocket carrying Dragon ignited, only to be cut off seconds later because of an excessive pressure reading in one of the engines.
A news conference after the attempted launch was told the flight aborted at T minus 0.5 seconds. The commercial space capsule was due to make its inaugural flight to the orbiting space laboratory, becoming the first non-government craft to do so. The next launch opportunity is Tuesday at 3:44 a.m. EDT -and weather forecasters predict a 60 percent chance of good conditions for liftoff then.

G8 leaders gather for summit at Camp David

Leaders of the major world economies are meeting for talks at a Group of Eight (G8) summit in Camp David, one which has been somewhat overshadowed by the eurozone debt crisis. With the future of the euro in doubt, the leaders of the United States, Germany, France, Britain, Japan, Russia, Italy, and Canada will try to weigh competing demands for growth-friendly spending with Germany's long-standing focus on austerity. Before the start of the first working session of the G8 summit, Obama told reporters that all the G8 nations were "absolutely committed" to the goals of growth, stability, and fiscal consolidation, as the leaders tried to bridge divisions on how to deal with the eurozone crisis. There were small protests in nearby Maryland towns, as Obama welcomed the world leaders, all wearing casual attire as is tradition at Camp David.

Facebook IPO hits the stock exchange

Facebook founder Mark Zuckerberg opened trading on the Nasdaq today from a ceremony in California, ahead of the social network's share sale. Facebook's hugely anticipated IPO is expected to value the Silicon Valley firm at upwards of $100 billion. But questions are being asked by insiders and new investors alike as to whether this the sign of a new Internet bubble? Or if Facebook is worth owning, then why did company insiders dump $9.2 billion in shares? The shares notched up big opening gains amid high demand and frenzied trading on the NASDAQ stock market under the ticker FB. The IPO could become the second-largest initial public offering in history, surpassing the value of General Motors' IPO.

Donna Summer, disco diva, dies aged 63

Fans of disco queen Donna Summer were paying tribute on Thursday as the news emerged that the 63-year-old singer died that morning in Florida. Summer, whose hits like 'Hot stuff', 'Love to love you baby' and 'Last dance' became the dance anthems for a generation in the seventies, recorded 19 number ones over the course of a career spanning four decades. New crew joins the International Space Station

Two Russians and an American have boarded the International Space Station (ISS) from a Soyuz spacecraft that was launched from the Baikonur Cosmodrome in Kazakhstan on Tuesday. American Joseph Acaba and Russians Gennady Padalka and Sergei Revlin are set to spend the next four and a half months in space.
