A nutty professor, a nutty candy bar, and a student named Nate, who just wants help with his paper.
Director's Note: This one was tricky to shoot. It shouldn't have been, but it was. We actually shot this whole thing over the course of two days. You can't really tell, but if you watch it on a TV, you'll see that in some shots, the blackboard has writing on it, and in others, it's clean. Stupid, I can't believe I missed that.
Why did it take two days to shoot this? Because some woman came into the classroom we were filming in and kicked us out.
And yes, I am aware that a Nutrageous bar does not have silver wrapping. I couldn't get one before we filmed, so I got a 3 Muskateers out of a vending machine.
And then I ate the wrapper.

Spend a day inside the head of a hungry, girl-crazy, and not so ordinary college student.
Director's Note: This is the film I always send out to festivals. I think it best represents my voice as a filmmaker, or did at the time.
I first wrote "Voices" in 2003 I believe, and it was a much darker story. There were no jokes, it was just about this loner/outcast and the obscure and angry thoughts in his head. I revisited the script later on and decided to turn it into a comedy. The worm speech was in the original script, just it wasn't as jokey...more morbid.
But this one's up there with "Breadsticks"...one of my best films (in my opinion).

A blind date that turns into every internet dater's worst nightmare.
Director's Note: "Breadsticks" was one of the last scripts written during my massive, winter 2005 script writing phase. Of all of them, it was my least favorite, and maybe one of the last ones I wrote. Ironic that it'd end up becoming what I consider one of my best films.
I think it's a pretty solid little film. I like the colors, I like the characters and I think the jokes work well. I remember there was a lot of positive energy on set. We bounced a lot of ideas off each other, trying to figure out what would make each joke really work...and I think it shows in the finished product.

A dark comedy about the Devil and a suicidal, drunk named Hal. Together, they try to win back Hal's ex-girlfriend by murdering her current boyfriend.
Director's Note: "Heaven & Hal" is another older story idea I had around 2003. Like "Voices", the original story was darker and very emotional. The working title for the project was "Dial 666", and it was about a man with Satan on his speed dial. He's lost the love of his life, and he asks the Devil to kill the man she left him for. Like I said, very very bleak.
I didn't want to make depressing movies, I wanted to make silly comedies, so I kept the basic idea, but made the Devil into a comedian. With this film, I also tried to move away from the quick 5-minute skit structure, and make an actual story, with more character development. I also enjoyed tackling realer issues, like the debate over religion.
I also consider this to be one of my "Fantasy" films...because it explores some of the darker thoughts we have at the darker times in our lives. It's wrong, but what guy doesn't fantasize about taking out the guy who just stole his girl?

One couple, one room, one million reasons to fight.
Director's Note: I had to write a play for a class I was taking, and I could only use one syllable words...so this is what I wrote. When I was staying at Harvard, I wanted to shoot this for fun, and Regina was eager to do some acting, so this is what we did.
Regina didn't have a lot of time to film, so I actually shot all of her scenes in like a half hour, then she had to leave. I then set up the tripod and acted out my stuff alone. I was concerned that people in my dorm would think I'd gone crazy in my room.
I also wanted this film to look very colorful, almost cartoon-like. I'd just seen a bit of the French musical, "The Umbrellas of Cherbourg" and I'd fallen in love with it. Regina is a singer and for awhile I thought about including some singing in this film, but we just didn't have enough time.

Steve is broke. He has a film degree, but he' still broke. So Steve starts a business with his friend Jason...making films for people's girlfriends. Making things for other guy's girlfriends...yeah, this is going to end real well.
Director's Note: This film kind of came out of nowhere. For a longtime I'd had the idea of making films for other people's girlfriends, just kinda floating around in my head. One night I was telling Dave about it, and how it'd make a good movie, and we both agreed we should make that movie. So I wrote this script pretty quickly, and we started shooting right away.
I remember I was going to use my regular voice for Steve, and he was just going to be very arrogant...but the night before we filmed, I started using the sleazier voice, and it stuck. I also wanted this film to be "popier", with all the fun dissolves and wipes, so the cartoonier voice just added to all that.
Looking back, I feel this is one of my best films, technically and story wise.

A man, a tree, and the handcuffs between them.
Director's Note: This film was created for a one minute movie festival (yes, I realize it's just over a minute, but this is the Director's cut, with the full Shattered Glass intro).
A few weeks before starting this project, I watched Jesus Christ Superstar and felt very inspired by the music. I've always wanted to make a musical, and I saw this super short film format as the perfect opportunity to take a stab at it.
I am very proud of this film. I don't think I've ever been 100% proud of something I've done...there's usually a few things I regret or wish I'd done differently...but not on this one. I believe strongly in the power of images set to music. I hope everyone enjoys this film as much as I do.
