Los Angeles is home to 261 charters, with 211 of them located in LA Unified.
More 80,000 LAUSD students, or about 12% of the district's total, attend charters, and more than 10,000 students are waitlisted, hoping to get into a charter. These are the stories of those schools, students, parents, volunteers, teachers and leaders.
Parents from more than 100 schools rallied at Exposition Park on Feb. 4, 2012 to demand high-quality public schools in every community and fair funding and facilities for all public school students. Visit www.familiesthatcan.org/rally to learn more about the event. The rally was coordinated by Families That Can, a statewide organization of charter school parents which is part of the California Charter Schools Association, in partnership with a wide range of community organizations, including the United Way, Families In Schools, Alliance for a Better Community, Communities for Teaching Excellence, EdVoice and Democrats for Education Reform.
