Hi Christian,
LightFish' real time capabilities were implemented afterwards. GlassFish stores all the metrics in a local database and pushes them in real time to all listeners as well.
The original intention behind LightFish was monitoring of nightly stress test jobs.

thanks for your comment! Regarding the Lifecycle-Interceptor: it is actually a great idea for a dedicated screencast. I worked here with copy-and-paste, to keep everything as simple as possible.

- Most of the application servers are free. You can buy support if you like.
- Tomcat comes with Java EE 6 support already :-): See TomEE and search for "Tomcats on Steroids" in my blog.
- There is almost no overhead between Tomcat and the other servers. Will probably record a screencast about that.
