On Monday, October 19 at 12:15 PM Bates students broke into simultaneous dance in the dining commons. Why, you ask? In celebration of a number... 350!
350 is the parts per million of atmospheric carbon-dioxide we need for a healthy planet. On October 24, 2009 we will stand together as one planet and call for a fair global climate treaty. United by a common call to action, we'll make it clear: the world needs an international plan that meets the latest science and gets us back to safety. Together, we will solve the climate crisis.

Six of the 30 cases of influenza-like illnesses at Bates College have been confirmed as H1N1. People with influenza-like illnesses have been sent home if they live within reasonable driving distance (300 miles) to the school or have been quarantined. This interview between Director of Health Services Christy Tisdale and BCTV's James Dowling-Healey '12 covers the actions Bates College is taking to limit the spread of H1N1. A clinic for nasal vaccinations is planned for Saturday, October 10. People should come according to the first letter of their last name (people with "A" last names will go first). There are nine-hundred nasal vaccines available. Most people should get vaccinated, but people with conditions like asthma or diabetes should not. There will be another clinic for people with those illnesses on October 15th. Seasonal flu vaccinations will be administered at a later date. People can get both vaccines. The vaccine for H1N1 will not protect people from seasonal flu and the vaccine for seasonal flu will not protect people from H1N1.
