What does it mean to follow the way of the salaf?

Following the way of the Salaf is the way which has been legislated in the Quran and Sunnah, the very sources of Islam. The Prophet (may Allah raise his rank and grant him peace) said to his daughter Fatimah: "Indeed, I am for you a blessed Salaf." (al-Bukhaaree (no. 2652))

When asked about which was the correct and acceptable way of understanding Islam, the Prophet (may Allah raise his rank and grant him peace) replied by saying: "That which I and my companions are upon." (Saheeh Sunan at-Tirmidhee (3/54)

Similarly, Allah says in the Quran that He is pleased with the companions "and also those who follow them exactly (in faith)." (Quran 9:100)

As such, He said regarding the Prophet (may Allah raise his rank and grant him security) and his companions:

"So if they believe as you (i.e. the Salaf) believe, they are indeed rightly guided."
(Quran 2:137)

All of the orthodox scholars of Islam followed the way of the Salaf in understanding religion. Early scholars such as Imam al-Awzaa'ee, who died 157 years after the Prophet's emigration to Medina, said: "Be patient upon the Sunnah, and stop where the people (i.e. the Salaf) stopped, and say what they said, and refrain from what they refrained from, and follow the path of your righteous Salaf; for verily, sufficient for you is what was sufficient for them." (al-Hujjah (6/A-B) of Ismail Abu Fadhl)

Today, one of the famous Sunni schools of jurisprudence is named after a scholar named Abu Hanifa. Millions of Muslims all over the world ascribe themselves to his school of jurisprudence; those who the media would term "mainstream" Muslims. Regarding adherence to the Salafi methodology, he said, "Adhere to the narrations and way of the Salaf, and beware of newly invented matters (in religion), for all of it is innovation." (Sawnul-Mantaq wal-Kalaam (p. 32) of As-Suyuti)

Salafis view the first three generations of Muslims, who are Muhammad's(SAWS) companions, and the two succeeding generations after them, the Tabi'in and the Taba' at-Tabi'in, as examples of how Islam should be practiced.

This principle is derived from the following hadith by Muhammad (SAWS):

" The people of my generation are the best, then those who follow them, and then those who follow the latter (i.e. the first three generations of Muslims). (Bukhari 3:48:819 and 820 )

Earlier generations of Muslims like Imam Malik conveyed similar sentiment: "Whosoever introduces into Islam an innovation, and holds it to be something good, has indeed alleged that Muhammad (SAWS) has betrayed his message." Imam Malik then stressed: "Read the saying of Allah -- the Most Blessed, the Most High: This day I have perfected your Religion for you, completed My favour upon you and I have chosen for you Islam as your Religion. [Al-Maa'idah 5:3].

Malik then concluded: "So that which was not part of the Religion at that time, cannot be part of the Religion today...And the last part of this Ummah cannot be rectified, except by that which rectified its first part."

Similarly, Abu Hanifa emphasized: "Adhere to the athar (narration) and the tareeqah (way) of the Salaf (Pious Predecessors) and beware of newly invented matters (in Religion) for all of it is innovation."
