Welcome to the University of California, San Francisco!
The University of California, San Francisco (UCSF) may have its roots in San Francisco, where it was founded as Toland Medical College in 1864 and affiliated with the University of California in 1873, but its groundbreaking life sciences research and world-class patient care have advanced the health of all.
UCSF is the only campus in the 10-campus UC system dedicated exclusively to providing graduate-level education in the life sciences and training the next generation of scientists, scholars and health professionals.
The birthplace of the biotechnology industry, UCSF is home to four Nobel laureates and a faculty of leaders on the forefront of HIV/AIDS, cancer, neurosciences and stem cell research. In fact, UCSF received more research funds from the National Institutes of Health than any other public institution in 2009 and received the second largest amount of all institutions nationwide.
UCSF consists of four professional schools -- dentistry, medicine, nursing and pharmacy; a Graduate Division; UCSF Medical Center; UCSF Children's Hospital; Helen Diller Family Comprehensive Cancer Center; and administrative, research and clinical centers located throughout San Francisco.
With more than 21,000 employees and a $3.3 billion operating budget, UCSF is the second largest employer in San Francisco and the fifth largest employer in the nine-county Bay Area.
