Interests

Theatre, writing, poetry and reading are my three greatest pleasures, then people I like (especially our conversations), cinema and music. My interests include facts and theories, but facts trump theories. Philosophy and Semantics are therefore my first concerns. After that, Politics from chimpanzee bands to Obama, Religion from chimpanzee bands to the Rat in the Hat, Science (especially astronomy/ physics and biosci/ anthropology) from the point Eve ate the apple (or maybe she caught her first termite, I don't know) to the destruction of the universe (If CERN works, maybe), and Mysteries of nature. My vices include psychology, epistemology, theoretical thinking and gratuitous grokking. Some would include my politics. I was born on Hiroshima day. Deduce my politics. My overwhelming interest is universal history, or how does everything fit together. My basic understanding of history grew out of having read The Mass Psychology of Fascism by Reich in 1980. It provided me with what has proven to be my most valid predictor of how governments and the churches would behave ever since. Prometheus is literally my first culture hero. My first literal hero is the ape woman whose footprints can be seen trying to escape a volcanic eruption. I am fascinated by the emergence of technology, culture, and individual consciousness (especially my own). I read anything on ancient history in general, the evolution of the "Monotheist meme" (in the original, not the blogger, sense of the word), Greece from Chaos to Lord Byron. Rome from the Etruscans until today (since Jesus never bombed the place), Northern Europe from the Neanderthals on, The British Islands, Celts and Jews and Africans, Templars and Freemasons, the American, French, and Socialist revolutionary traditions, the unpleasantries between the races of the United States, including Yankees, Quakers, and Southerners, from Virginians to my own white trash ancestors ( and proud of them), and the totally forgotten liberal German-American culture that was brutally suppressed in the Lousy War (the so-called "Great"), and the 60s. I am long over any new interest in WW II. Been there, done that, read the book, saw the movie. If my Dad wasn't one of them, I would be thankful the greatest generation will be gone. "I have nothing against Aristides. I am just tired of hearing him called 'the Just'!" The most important thinkers I have read were Wilhelm Reich and Robert Anton Wilson, although there is nothing important in Reich that is not better explained by Wilson in light of later evidence, (unless Reich is right, on which I am agnostic) but I still recommend Reich's The Mass Psychology of Fascism and The Murder of Christ on literary grounds, if no other. One last vice. I have no belief in even the possibility to knowing the origins of Life, the Universe, and All That. It was written by Douglas Adams. Beyond that we cannot know, but I am more willing to discuss. In more general terms, I am more agnostic than Descartes or even Bishop Berkeley, but I accept probability for the sake of functioning in time and space. Time and space, at least, I am more than 99% sure are facts. Time and space and matter and motion are observable facts. All else is theory. For example, in time and space, singularities and infinities do not exist. That is my premise. I am therefore, utterly agnostic about the possibility that questions about creation are even real questions, but I am willing to discuss them. The world view I find most plausible and practical is based on Einstein's relativity, darwinian microevolution, Marx's materialist history, and Freud, who described my psychological development with stunning accuracy up to age 13.
