What is a roguelike? Come and find out!
The definition of a roguelike is actually pretty complicated. Most games in the genre involve randomly-generated content and permadeath, with a focus on preparedness and caution.
That said, there's a lot (and I mean a LOT) of wiggle room. For non-video information regarding roguelikes, search for RogueBasin or Temple of the Roguelike: both of these are great resources in finding and learning about the genre.
