The history of footy tipping is a long one, with many holes in the continuity. The first footy tipping competition was held in 1647 in the American town of New Salem, Conneticut and involved just two tipsters. Annabel Tomkins and her friend Catherine Fortescue predicted the winners for the opening round of the 1992 Winfield Cup, despite the Winfield Cup, rugby league and even Australia being centuries off being invented. Both women were burnt at the stake for practising witchcraft and tipping Manly.

This made tipping hugely unappealing for the next 300 years, but the art regained popularity in the early 1980's where large groups of men would form competitions to tip how many weeks Les Boyd would be suspended for that particular season. As this would render the competition idle for most of the season, it was suggested tipsters predict the results of the weekends fixtures, much like Gold Lotto but with rugby league.

Tipping competitions continued to gain popularity throughout the 1990's and early 2000's as an outlet to tip against Manly or the Broncos each week, depending on which side of the border you live on. Tipping comps are held in such far flung places as the U.S., Canada, Poland and Traralgon. The advent of the internet has never made it easier to tip against your buddies in the next cubicle or in communist North Korea.
