Jesus Christ is the Messiah and the incarnation of God the Son. Since humankind is sinful and morally imperfect, and thus estranged from fellowship with the perfect One True God, God the Father sent His Son to suffer and die for our sins, thus saving us from eternal damnation in Hell, which is a state of anguish caused by a permanent separation from God; Christians disagree whether Biblical descriptions of physical pain and torment in Hell should be taken literally or metaphorically. Regardless, one's salvation is contingent upon his or her acceptance of Christ as Savior and Lord, for an unbeliever who rejected God and His Son cannot stand in the Almighty's presence because sin is incompatible with God's righteousness.
The Bible states that Jesus was miraculously born of Mary, who was a virgin at the time of Christ's birth. According to Luke 2:42-50, when He was just 12 years old, His parents took Him to Jerusalem for the Feast of the Passover. Jesus began talking with the Masters of the Law, or Jewish priests and scribes who were specially trained to interpret the Jewish Scriptures. His parents apparently mistakenly left him in Jerusalem and returned home to Nazareth. When they realized that Jesus wasn't with their group, they returned to Jerusalem and found him in the temple. What happens to Him after that is not known, although there are many hypotheses. However, we know that around the age of 30, He started His mission and His work, by gathering disciples and traveling to spread the message of the Kingdom of God.
Jesus is depicted in the Bible as having performed many miracles. Two of the most famous ones are His miraculous feeding of five thousand men in the wilderness and raising Lazareth from the dead. When He was about 33 years old, Jesus entered Jerusalem on the Sunday before Passover. After teaching the crowds in the Temple for a few days, He had dinner with the Apostles (the "Last Supper") and instituted the Eucharist, a ritual whereby the Apostles and other Christians could remember His sacrificial death. During the supper, Judas Iscariot was exposed as a traitor by Christ and went to the chief priests to tell them to arrest Jesus. After giving a speech to the remaining disciples, He led them to Gethsemane, where He earnestly prayed before being arrested. After a fraudelent trial in front of Sanhedrin, He was led to the Roman governor Pontius Pilate, who had the authority to sentence Jesus to death. Although Pilate was initially reluctant to execute Jesus, the restless crowd in Jerusalem convinced him to crucify Christ. Thus, Jesus was taken to a place outside of Jerusalem called Golgotha and crucified between two thieves. Several hours later, He died. However, several days after His death, on a Sunday, Jesus rose from the dead. He first appeared to Mary Magdelene, then the rest of the disciples. Forty days after the Resurrection, Jesus ascended into Heaven and sat on the right hand of God. The Bible says that He will one day return to Earth in power and great glory to judge the living and the dead.
