Dio Brando (ディオ・ブランドー, Dio Burandō?) is a fictional character from the manga and anime series JoJo's Bizarre Adventure. He is the primary antagonist of Parts 1 and 3, although he is also considered to be the main villain of the entire series, as his actions affect the JoJo universe long after his death. Dio's son, Giorno Giovana, is the protagonist of JoJo's Bizarre Adventure OVA Part 5 .
Dio's full name is an homage to both actor Marlon Brando and heavy metal icon Ronnie James Dio.
Dio Brando's treacherous, sadistic nature may be partially explained by his abusive upbringing at the hands of an alcoholic father, whom he later killed by a slow poisoning over time. He is also ambitious, narcissistic, arrogant and megalomaniacal. He will do anything to get what he wants, even if it means trampling people, like he did to Jonathan Joestar when they were young, and relinquishing his humanity in favor of becoming a vampire.
JoJo's Bizarre Adventure (ジョジョの奇妙な冒険, Jojo no Kimyō na Bōken?) is a manga written and illustrated by Hirohiko Araki. Every main character's name in each part can be read as JoJo. The manga, published by Shueisha in their magazine Weekly Shōnen Jump, started in 1987 and went on to 2004. It is currently Shōnen Jump's second longest running manga with 100 volumes and counting (only Kochira Katsushika-ku Kameari Kōen-mae Hashutsujo, with over 160 volumes, has more.) It is the longest manga not to have a TV adaptation, although there are two OVA series adaptations.
