The Phil, also known as the University Philosophical Society, is the largest and oldest student society in Trinity College. Since our foundation in the 17th century, The Phil has concerned itself with the art of oratory, teaching young people the skills of public speaking and the value of free speech. In recent years the Society has branched out to include a whole host of activities, from public speaking workshops and competitions, to trips away, parties, social gatherings and renowned guest speakers.

In recent years actor Al Pacino, Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsberg, presidential candidate John McCain, actress Dame Helen Mirren, writer Sir Salman Rushdie and Nobel Peace Prize winner Archbishop Desmond Tutu have addressed the society's student members.

Traditionally, members of The Phil meet every Thursday evening to discuss a paper, debate a motion or hear an address. Come along to one of our weekly debates and observe our wacky traditions before testing your wits against leading politicians, journalists, activists, leaders, academics and dissidents...
