Hmm, thats' strange. I don't believe you find the 50. cal anywhere in the game, and all I remember doing is buying it. The only thing I can imagine is that it isn't available from the first time you meet Drebin, but that doesn't sound quite right either.
It doesn't go by the name Barrett 50. cal by the way, it's called the "M82A2", look for that name instead, you might have skipped over it.
