Shirley is a fashion sewing instructor with many years of experience both professional and personal. Shirley's personal motto is "Homemade is only good when it comes from the kitchen." In the mid 70's, after years of practicing her craft as an educator at Ball State in Muncie, Mrs. Adams saw that her of graduates were not finding employment easily as political and social change eliminated home economics and related courses from public and private schools where her young graduates would begin their careers as educators. Instead of surrendering to this downward trend, in conjunction with the business department, she created a 4-year Fashion Merchandising degree, opening up opportunities in several different fields of interest for these students.
Continuing as an educator in Cleveland, Ohio, the local PBS station asked her to present a weekly half hour program on sewing fundamentals. This led to the creation of The Sewing Connection, a long running PBS series which helped spark the whole sewing-on-TV industry. Until the first Sewing Connection episode, sewing programs consisted of crafting, quilting, and alterations. Shirley knew she could use couture sewing as a way to express her art. She and her husband, John, moved back to Indiana to build, staff, and run this new business. She retired the Sewing Connection after 20 years. Now, she "paints" with fiber on hand crafted purses. Her artwork can be seen in the Gallery On The Square in Danville, Indiana and the Glick Center at Indiana University Eye Center in Indianapolis.
