About Me:

My videos will focus on religion. I'm an atheist, an agnostic, and an anti-theist, none of which are terms of particular pride for me: I'd be more proud to be known as a good cook than an atheist but, as it happens, I'm not a very good cook. However- and it's a lamentable fact- religious values and perspectives prevail... so I'll focus less on cooking.

First: my chief criticism is that most non-trivial religious claims are just blatantly (and often outrageously) false. By non-trivial, I mean that "don't commit murder" is a trivial religious moral commandment, because atheists uphold this prescription too. However, claims about the after-life, the meaning of life, the source of morality, the origins of the universe etc... are all NON-trivial, in that each religion has its own spin on the subject, and religion as a whole stands apart from many secular viewpoints on these issues.

Second: my problem with religion is that it does harm, which wouldn't mean much if it wasn't for the first bit. As it happens, though, these ideas are probably false and the harm they do is, therefore, probably unnecessary. In short, it chaps my ass.

I don't see that there's anything to be careful about; most people, regardless of religious creed accept that murder is objectionable, reprehensible, wrong- whatever.

Please forego the pedantic rejoinder "you can't speak for every X." Grown ups use language like this all the time without trouble- I didn't deliberately make use of the universal "all," don't pretend it was there.

That decontextualized quote of Singer's doesn't confront what I was saying in the least. If you were trying to demonstrate that not all atheists subscribe to the prescription "Don't commit murder" you couldn't have missed the mark by a wider margin in selecting Peter Singer.

"...'don't commit murder' is a trivial religious moral commandment, because atheists uphold this prescription too."
Careful, there, most atheists contend that atheism is just an absence of belief in supernatural deities, that atheists in fact have no universal creed or commandments. AFAIK Humanists condemn murder, but you can't speak for all atheists.
"...we should recognise that the fact that a being is human, and alive, does not in itself tell us whether it is wrong to take that being's life."
-Peter Singer
