I am the U.S. Congressman from Iowa's Third Congressional District.
In the 111th Congress, the House Committee on Agriculture named me as Chairman of the Agriculture Subcommittee on General Farm Commodities and Risk Management. I am one of only 18 farmers in the House of Representatives. I also serve on the House Committee on Transportation and Infrastructure.
Prior to my legislative career, I spent twenty years in the Army. I was drafted in the Army in 1956 as a private. I later graduated from Artillery Officers Candidate School, eventually rising to the rank of Lieutenant Colonel. During that time I served two one-year tours of duty as an assault helicopter pilot in Vietnam.
Dody and I have been married for more than fifty years. Dody has been a teacher for thirty-six years. Together we have three children and four grandchildren.
