Pascal Blais - Animation Director
Pascal is an animation director and president of Pascal Blais Studio, a company dedicated to producing high quality animation for TV commercials and the film industry.
Born in Montreal, he is an autodidactic animator who, inspired by Disney's storytelling style, pursued classical animation at an early age. He studied classical painting, sculpture and drawing at Jean-de-Brebeuf Art College.
Founding Pascal Blais Studio in 1983, his name quickly became a symbol for its high-quality work, in the field of animation. As his company grew, he broadened the range of animation services from traditional 2D cel animation, stop-motion and clay animation to 3D computer animation, live-action and mixed-media techniques.
Producing spots in various languages for major clients in Canada, the United States, and South America, Europe, and the Far East, winning praise along the way from the industry, with many international awards.
Soon his studio established itself as a lighthouse for internationally acclaimed talents such as Alexander Petrov, Cordell Barker, Rob Valley and others.
By 1997, this abundant creativity prompted SPB's move into a new market: animated film. Its first effort, the short film The Old Lady and the Pigeons, won many international prizes, including a Genie in Canada and a BAFTA Award in Britain, and secured an Oscar nomination.
But the Oscar would go to SPB's next film, the Old Man and the Sea directed by Alexander Petrov. Based on the novella by Ernest Hemingway, the film is an achievement in animation. Over two years in the making, it involved over 29,000 hand painted images, and was the first animated film ever shot with a large-format IMAX camera developed by his technological team.
Post-Oscar, his company has continued to find new business in ever-greater artistic challenges from producing a beautifully nostalgic, animated version of Santa for the Coca-Cola company to producing 60 sec spots adapting Gershwin's rhapsody in blue for United Airlines.
His studio is currently developing new business opportunities, creating original content projects for TV series and feature films.
