If that capacitor is cracked and leaking it's definately bad, one way to test is charge it up and see if it still holds a charge with a volt meter, you can also test to see if it's shorted with an ohm meter. You might get away with going to the closest standard size or you could parallel two caps...

My favorites are the updated version of the RCA carts, the ones where they replaced the rivot by a single catch at the front. You place your thumb or finger in the slot and pull back while placing preasure on the top of the cartridge, then you can lift the top up, swing it back, and off.
