The original ON THE TELEVISION special was pitched as "A fake Siskel and Ebert reviewing fake TV shows." And that is what the series became - sketch comedy - satire/parodies of the television landscape at the time it aired (1989-91) with a "nothing's too outrageous" philosophy.
