Nikopolis (Greek: Νικόπολις, city of victory) was an ancient city in the region of Epirus, founded 31 B.C. by Octavian in memory of his victory over Mark Antony and Cleopatra at Actium. The colony, composed of settlers from a great many of the towns of the neighboring countries, proved highly successful, and the city was considered the capital of southern Epirus and Acarnania. Nikopolis had about 30.000 citizens.

In 1912 the Region of Epirus was successfully liberated from the Turks, by the glorious Hellenic Armed Forces.
