Natalie Bassingthwaighte has a new tattoo on the inside of her left wrist: a tiny star. It means a lot to her. "When I was making this album I felt like I was surrounded by stars," she explains. "Every day I asked if the stars were aligning and if everything was coming together OK and they were. "There are also two songs about stars. One is about falling in love called '1000 Stars' and that ended up being the album title. And there's a song about my grandad who's passed away and how he's the brightest star in the sky and we have our little moments together. The symbol of the star was just everywhere."

To celebrate the making of her first solo album, Natalie had the star tattooed on her wrist in LA just as the album was completed last year. "Every time I look at it, I can touch it or I can kiss it or make a wish and it reminds me of my grandad and the achievement of this album."

Natalie has come along way from being a little girl in Wollongong wanting to sing and dance for her family. After years of performing at school, she started her career in musical theatre and has starred in the smash hit musicals Rent, Chicago, Grease and Footloose.

She is best known for playing bad girl Izzy Hoyland on Neighbours, a role that earned a Gold Logie nomination, and for her rocking performances as the lead singer of electro-rock act Rogue Traders. Described as "Kylie meets Trent Reznor on a good day", the Rogue Traders took Natalie around the world, earning seven ARIA nominations and multi-platinum album sales. Back in Australia, Natalie hosted the biggest television show of 2008, So You Think You Can Dance and released a book, Sistahood: A Journal Of Self-Discovery with her younger sister Nicky.

After all that, Natalie needed a lie down. "I had three weeks of just doing nothing. I lay on the beach and read books. I felt so rejuvenated and released and the album reflects that. Most of the songs on there are really free and passionate and happy and joyous and about achieving and believing," she says.
