PineCone CD Preview - Piedmont Stringbands PineCone, the Piedmont Council of Traditional Music, releases its first CD October 2009. "Going Down to Raleigh: Stringband Music in the North Carolina Piedmont 1976-1998" is a two-disc anthology including field recordings that highlight the distinctive music traditions of the Piedmont region. The collection features 48 old-time regional stringband dance tunes and songs.

History
North Carolina is known throughout the world for its pottery traditions, literary legacy, Southern Appalachian music traditions, jazz, blues and gospel heritage, and an abundance of artists and arts institutions. Recognizing the state's rich cultural climate, Governor Terry Sanford established a state arts council in 1964 to strengthen North Carolina's creativity, invention and prosperity. In 1967 the Arts Council published its first survey of the arts in the state. There were 17 local arts councils and 233 other arts organizations. Today there
are more than 2,934 nonprofit arts organizations and a vibrant arts industry employing more than 159,000 creative workers.
