Young oratorio choir from Würzburg, Germany
The Monteverdichor Würzburg consists of talented singers, mainly students of all faculties of the University of Würzburg and the Würzburg Academy of Music.
Six times per year the choir organises and stages concerts performing orchestrated choir literature through all the ages on a very high level. For this purpose a philharmonic orchestra, the Mainphilharmonie, was founded consisting of young professional and succesful musicians from whole Germany who come together for each concert in a different line-up satisfying the needs of the particular instrumentation.
The conductor Matthias Beckert (born 1976) studied music education, sacred music, orchestral conducting and choral conducting. In 2007 he was honoured by the Bavarian Radio Choir for the successful participation at the choir conducting forum under the guidance of Gustav Sjökvist. In 2008 he was invited to give concerts at the International Bach Festival Stuttgart together with the famous Gächinger Kantorei and the Bach Kollegium Stuttgart. Beckert also is known in whole Germany as well as many other European countries for conducting the chamber choir Vokalensemble Cantabile Regensburg.
The Monteverdichor Würzburg is regarded as a precursor of historically informed perfomances like e.g. J.S.Bach´s "St. Matthiew Passion" with ancient instruments. But they also attract attention by staging rather rarely performed modern music like Franz Schmidt´s "Das Buch mit sieben Siegeln", Arthur Honnegger´s "Une cantate de noël" or Leoš Janáček´s "Mše Glagolskaja". In 2006 they worked together with the international label CPO recording the oratory "Die Geburt Christi" of Heinrich von Herzogenberg. Furthermore, for their outstanding performances they were awarded the Culture Medal of Würzburg in 2007.
The Monteverdi Choir is a joint project of the catholic and protestant student communities of Würzburg.
