Question :
Why upscale, when there's no quality increase in doing so?
Answer :
Because YouTube sucks, and won't let people upload videos in 640x360, for example, or in a native DVD resolution like 720x480 while having set an aspect-ratio flag to make it 16:9 or 4:3.
YouTube forces people to either be content with a video res of 480x270 (fmt=18), OR, people are forced to upscale to 1280x720, just to not get crap quality.
Which, yes, is terrible waste of bits...
It would be much better if YT allowed videos to be in any resolution (640x360, 720x405, 853x480, 1024x576, etc..).
