I call our modern world The Argument Society: everyone has something to sell, whether a product or idea. Thus the world is made of persuasion, including yours. The four Ps of persuasion: promotion, publicity, propaganda and polemics. It's all selective perception. Outside of science, what is true? The world is made up of millions of people trying to convince me of something I do not already believe, including YOU.

Re the Baloney Detection Kit video: I think it was a mistake to refer to 'global warming skeptics' as skeptics at all. At the risk of using a much lamented, often hated phrase - they're debunkers. These people are either paid off by lobby groups or have some other special interest, and often (as Dr. Shermer points out) they are wilfully dishonest and selective with the data they present. I think that while the word skeptic is so marred by negative connotation, particularly amongst the very crowd we're trying to reach, we should be careful to differentiate between the wilfully dishonest debunkers and the true honest skeptics. Just a thought.
