I found the CPR vid, and decided to check all vids on the channel. This is a great channel. Has answered many questions for me and brought up things I never thought about. Great job on the vids. Easy to understand.

Has this procedure changed at all due to the fact that they now recommend just chest compressions for humans? The emphasis on breathing has been eliminated or scaled back?

The video is very helpful and informative. Unfortunately I viewed it too late. Our beautiful bordernease dog and best friend died thursday (jan 27) . we tried to revive him, but our efforts failed. now that i have seen your video, i am armed with the right technique and information. however, the guilt that i feel is so terrible. i keep seeing his lifeless body lying there, and keep re-living how i would save him (now that i know how.) we did chest compressions (about 5 at a time.) blew into his mouth, not his snout, and didnt even know where to check for a pulse. He lived to his life expectancy, and had a great and helthy life. i cant get over this. i keep thinking he'd perhaps still be alive. he was out in the yard with my husband, took a step onto the back deck and collapsed, he then had a seizure, and looked as if he was dead pretty much right away. i am so heartbroken.

Melanie, my Doberman recently suffered a DCM (Dilated Cardioy Myapathy) event and my CPR efforts were ineffective.
Do you know if it is possible for a Doberman to recover from DCM sudden death syndrome through CPR and medical attention? The Veterinarian I rushed him to said no, but being an engineer I do not take "no or can't" very easily. Thanks

Hi Melanie,

Great video! I was curious what the 15:1 compression to ventilation ratio is based on? I'm a Paramedic and an active CPR instructor for the American Heart Association (and I realize humans and animals are very different) so by no means am I calming to be an animal expert.
The CPR guidelines that we use for adults and children (30:2) are largely based on animal studies. Pressure measurements were recorded in a laboratory after inducing cardiac arrest into K9 and swine models and the end result was the finding that they achieved maximum oxygenated coronary blood flow at compression to ventilation ratios of ~ 50:2 and 60:2 in another study, and the best 24 hour neuro outcome measured in the animals was at a compression to ventilation ratio of 100:2.

Curious what your thoughts on this would be. Thanks!
