They are concealed deep in space, far away from our solar system magnificently coloured and very beautiful nebulae, clusters of stars and galaxies. These distant objects can only be photographed with the aid of long exposure times, together with compensation for rotation of the Earth.
It is an enormous technical effort, but the results show amazing details that were reserved only to large observatories until just a few years ago.
Most of the following pictures have been taken
with a digital single lens reflex camera and a
4" apochromatic lens.

Mark Hellweg - who has always had a passion for astrophotography since he was first gripped in his childhood by the beauty of our universe has tried to capture the splendid colours of the nebulae on slide film. It has been only as from just a few years ago however that digital technology has enabled previously inconceivable picture quality, something of which he, as a young amateur astrophotographer, could only dream...
